Love, Lucas by Chantele Sedgwick (spoiler-free review)
*suicidal thoughts
Summary
After losing her brother to cancer, Oakley finds herself moving to her aunts house temporarily until she is ready to face her old life. She has never really spent much time with her aunt until now but she is grateful to get away. The new house she is staying in is right near a beach; the perfect costal town. Oakley loves photography and, once she's ready to leave the house, it's her only outlet. Two days into her stay and her mother hands her a notebook. Lucas's Diary. She is so thankful to have it but how is she meant to keep on living when he cant? It's not fair. But once she starts greeting the locals, things get easier. She makes friends, starts to talk to her mum more, but she still refuses to live like Lucas can't. Eventually she has to make a choice; die, survive or live.
(I'm not even gonna lie, that's a pretty amazing summary)
Review
Stars:⭐⭐⭐
What would make it better? I personally feel like it could have been longer. I felt like when it ended I was like, wtf happened to that character and was that story line rlly needed? No. As well as, boy did she move on quick. It's been like 2-months and she's fully moved on with her life. In different circumstances, this could be more believable, but her brother was literally her closest friend and she's a fucking child. I think it would take a bit longer mate.
What was done well? I feel like, even though the author didn't do the best job at conveying it, the protagonist was still a complex and realistic character in terms of personality.
Who would I recommend this to? I'd say this is probably aimed at people between 11-13 years old. It's still a sad book dealing with grief and cancer but nowhere near as hardcore as it could have been.
This one is for people who have audible. If you do, it is currently included in your package but eventually it will be replaced by something else so hurry!!!!!!!! Listen to Love, Lucas here.
